The importance of diversification in investment

Talk to most investors and they intrinsically understand the idea behind diversification. A liberal mix of different investment ideas, either at the fund level or in individual investments, spread across assets which doesn’t make your portfolio vulnerable to sudden changes in the value of a single investment. Massive US fund management firm Fidelity for instance has showed that just by mixing bonds and fixed income investments into a portfolio of equities, investors can achieve much less volatility without giving up much in the way of returns. But do investors really practise proper diversification within their portfolio of investments? The evidence suggests otherwise, despite decades of research which advises that diversifying a portfolio is a smart move.
